FanX16: Day 3 Fan-Tastic fun

The last day of one of these comic con conventions is always a little chaotic: the biggest stars, the most expensive events, the desperation to see and do everything before it's too late...all kicks in when your lack of sleep and dehydration are at its worst.  Still worth it.

First up was the panel with Alex Kingston whom I love from ER and most others love from Dr. Who.  She is such a quirky lady, almost like a real life Ms. Frizzle.  Some fun stories from her panel:

-The filmed an episode of Dr. Who in Monument Valley, UT and it got a little creepy because when people realized they were there, it was like people appeared out of thin air and started walking across the valley, almost like zombies.

-She has always been into drama and costumes, loved to dress up always.
-When she got cast in ER she was nervous because of the commitment to one character for a 5 year contract.  She ended up being on the show for 7 seasons.
-"An actors life is really the life of a gypsy."
-In Dr. Who, River was only supposed to be in a 2 episode arc.
-The most emotionally difficult scene on Dr. Who is was saying farewell to the Doctor, they only let them do it in 1 take.
-The most emotionally difficult scene on ER was losing Dr. Greene.  She was upset about it and felt abandoned for a week after (so did we as fans!).
-"I am quite naughty and do a lot of naughty things."
-On ER they used a lot of prosthetics to cut into, and in the scene where she does open heart surgery in the ED, she couldn't tell the difference between the extra's real chest and the prosthetic chest.  So she put the clamps on his nipples, thinking it was the prosthetic.  It wasn't.
-She said Matt Smith, Karen Gillian, and Arthur Darvill burned the candle at both ends and she was like the mother on set.
-She knew she was married to the Doctor and was Amy and Rory's daughter about 6 months before any of them did.
-She really loved working on ER because they were being educated about medicine and acting.  Although she felt like she could do open-heart surgery herself.

Later on Saturday I had a chance to meet Alex and grab an autograph.  I told her how ER had inspired me to become a nurse and she praised the character of Carol Hathaway in being such a great character.  She wanted to know how realistic ER was compared to the real deal, and I told her it was much better than most other medical shows.

Jason Isaacs was up next and his panel was one of my favorites.  I usually like the panels without moderators better and he didn't mess around, spewing forth the answers to the questions he always gets and never wants.  Some other highlights include:

-"I've been in some amazing stories in my time."
-"I'm a comic book geek, you're my people."
-He became an actor because he is awkward in real life.
-Originally he auditioned for the role of Gilderoy Lockhart in Harry Potter.  He had just been cast as Captain Hook and didn't want to play multiple villians in children's literature, so when they asked him to audition as Malfoy instead he was mad.
-He said there are no good guys and bad guys, just really complex characters.
-Lucius is a racist who demonizes "the other" and his fear nearly destroys him.  Captain Hook was terrified of youth and becomes desperate.  Even that orange guy with a squirrel on his head is afraid and that is why he acts the way he does (Trump). Most bullies are cowards.
-Jason took ownership of the character of Lucius Malfoy and made him what he is.  The originally had him as a business looking man in a suit with salt and pepper hair.  Jason was insistent that he was a wizard who was so racist against muggles he would never look like one.  Basically grabbed a cheap blond wig and a velvet drape and said this is how the character should look.
-The first scene he filmed was at the end of Chamber of Secrets and he had to storm out of Dumbledore's office.  Funny stories about how he had to interact with Dobby who wasn't really there (he is CGI) and how he started doing things like kicking him and whacking him with a cane and the artists had to start taking notes so they could create Dobby to fit the scene.
-Talked about how no one played sinister better than Alan Rickman.
-"Voldemort castrated my wand."
-Discussed how Peter Pan was really Wendy's story.
-While Harry was destined to be the hero, Draco was also a hero because he broke the chain of bulling and abuse and made a noble decision.

The next panel was Jeremy Renner.  Words cannot express how happy I am that I was able to meet him, grab a picture, and listen to him talk movies.  In 2012 I blogged about my love of Jeremy Renner.  Please read it and judge me as you wish, I don't care.  Ok, so here are some highlights for his panel:

-On Civil War:  What I have seen is really spectacular.
-He hasn't broken a sweat in over a year and would keep it that way but no one wants to see a fat Hawkeye.
-He thinks Hawkeye is a really interesting character and that is why he wanted to play him.
-He is still recovering from an injury he received filming Age of Ultron.
-Spiderman was his favorite superhero as a kid.
-Playing Jeffery Dahmer really messed him up for awhile (I still need to see this movie).
-When filming the scene where Quicksilver dies, they shot a few scenes where he wouldn't die as well.  Jeremy just put his hand over Quicksilvers mouth to kill him off anyway.
-On acting:  If there is anything you love doing that makes you smile that isn't acting...do that instead.  But if you are going to go into acting don't go in thinking you will fail.
-Filming Hurtlocker was an interesting, amazing, and difficult experience in the 130 degree weather in Jordan.  They originally were going to film in Kuwait but the temperatures were reaching 150 degrees there.
-Most of the time the arrows are CGI so the most difficult part of filming is when he had a real one and he had to get the shot but not actually hit anyone on accident.
-He thought that Banner and Natasha was really weird and Hawkeye and Natasha have some words about it in Civil War.
-Has been recording some of his music and hopes to release it soon (we hope so too!).

Some other awesome stuff that happened:

When I got out of my photo ops, there was a Dance Party with Joey Fatone occurring on celebrity row. Now let's me be honest, I was never into the Boy Band scene.  I liked a few songs by Backstreet Boys and NSYNC but they were never my thing, so I didn't think much of it except I needed a pick-me-up so I decided to check it out.  People and creatures were dancing like crazy and it was actually a lot of fun.  I grabbed a selfie with Joey and he said that all pictures come with free hugs and grabbed me into a bear hug.  It was a lie, I didn't see him hug the girls in front of me in line or the one after me, but I needed that hug and will #winning that moment.

Around the Con Laura, Joey, Becca, Annicka, Jill, and I had misadventures, here are a few:

I see this dude every day of every con.

FanX16: Day 2 Panel Power

Friday got off to an awesome start.  I am going to share my favorite pro-tip in this post because I utilized it to max effect on Friday.

Pro-tip: If you want autographs/photo ops from the bigger names, buy VIP or Gold Pass.  That extra hour in the morning to double check times the celebs are available and even grab a few autographs or selfies before the day is in full swing.

Becca and Annicka joined me and we went and met Jason Issacs.  He is the one and only Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter series, but more importantly to me he played Captain Hook in my favorite rendition of Peter Pan. Don't mistake what I am saying, Hook is my favorite movie of all time, but the movie Peter Pan from 2003, starring Jeremy Sumpter is fantastic.  Anyway, I digress.  My sister's, Becca, and I were getting a photo with Jason on Friday so we made Peter Pan quote shirts.  I chose the quote "Old, Alone, Done For"  which are the unhappy thoughts that finally bring Captain Hook down and he gets snapped by the crocodile.  When I finally met Jason, I had picked a Captain Hook photo to be autographed and showed off my shirt.  He told me he was glad I picked that photo because that was his most favorite role.  He also said he always gets asked if it hurt to be eaten by a crocodile, and he is like...ummmm, special effects?  Meeting him was just plain fun.  When we went for our photo op later, he pointed at me and said, "Hey the shirt!"

Becca and I headed to the Paul Blackthorne and Charlotte Ross, "SmoaknLance" of Arrow panel.  I discovered Arrow my first year at Salt Lake Comic Con.  They have brought so many guests from the show and every single one is the nicest person on earth.  These two were no different.  Some highlights from the panel:

-Paul was offered Detective Lance while he was in the failing series River.
-Charlotte is like a female Kevin Bacon, she has been in so many things with so many awesome people (and Paul claims she has been in bed with everyone on TV as well).
-Charlotte loves playing mama Smoak because she is always optimistic and hopeful even though she has been screwed over.
-Paul said that the #getlancelaid started trending when Charlotte was cast.  He loves their dynamic.
-Paul's favorite villain on the show has been Damien Darhk because Neil (the actor who portrays him) elevates you to another level as you play off of him.
-Charlotte says she has been acting 30 years and you always have room to improve and grow. You also can't beat yourself up or take yourself too seriously.
-Paul said there is a lot going on up there with John Barrowman, but loves working with his crazy self.

On Thursday I was able to meet Paul and grab a selfie.  He has a campaign to save the Rhinos in Vietnam and is heading to Vietnam in May.  We talked about Vietnam and Cambodia and he applauded me on having a real career that actually means something.  When we went to take out picture he said we had to hug because we were awesome (or something to that affect, as soon as we started hugging I forgot what was happening).  We took a few pictures until we had one he loved.  It was fantastic and one of my best moments of the whole weekend.

I'll be honest, I still haven't finished Firefly, but I had heard that Alan Tudyk's panels were pretty epic and since he will be in Star Wars: Rogue One this December I grabbed the chance to meet up with Annicka and go.  It was totally worth it.  Alan is a spaz in the best possible way.  He has a briefcase full of whatever and autographs something from it for every person who asks a question.  Like doilies, garbage, passport photos, contact solution whatevers.  It was hilarious.  Some other highlights from his panel:

-Season 2 of ConMan starts filming on Monday.
-Says that him dying in Firefly is a spoiler so spoiled that you can smell it.
-"A leaf on the wind"  when people quote that to him all he can think is how a leaf in the wind is dead.  He should have figured out that he would die in Firefly.
-He just finished filming a pilot for the DC Universe in Vancouver called Powerless.
-If he had to be one of his characters for the rest of his life he would choose Wash but then would he be dead?  He really likes those people on the ship and he gets to fly in space.
-He has done voices for Frozen, Zootopia, Wreck it Ralph, and Big Hero 6.
-He can't tell any Rogue One stories.
-He went to Julliard and they knocked his native Texan accent out.

Next up was George Takei who I have been lucky enough to meet before.  He is such a dynamic person who was in an interment camp as a Japanese child in America during World War II and he also marched with Martin Luther King Jr. Other highlights include:

-He talked about that Star Trek is so unusual because when it was made in the 60's and 70's it was so diverse.
-The strength of a Starship lies in its diversity.
-This show demonstrated infinite diversity and infinite determination.
-The most rewarding part of his career has the creation and performing of Allegiant, a musical on Broadway in 2015 about the Japanese Internment camps.
-He talked about being around for the 50th anniversary of Star Trek and he plans on being around for the 100th with the rest of us.

Our next panel was Peter Facinelli star of Nurse Jackie, Supergirl, and of course Twilight.  Highlights include:

-First decided to become an actor when he saw Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
-He is first generation American so his parents (Italian) thought being an actor was a ridiculous plan.
-When he did 4 episodes of Glee he kept asking himself "how to I react to that?!" when people would burst into song.
-He didn't think Twilight would be seen by anyone so they had a lot more fun filming the first one than the others.
-Grew up reading Spiderman comics
-He wrote a notebook of Carlisle's personal history to prepare for the character.  Became particular about what the character should wear and how he would react in various situations.
-When they were finally recognizable during Twilight filming, they would sit around the hotel and play the Twilight board games.
-His favorite Twilight scene was the first they filmed, the baseball scene.  He had to teach Robert how to play.

On Saturday Annicka and I grabbed a photo with Peter:

Our last panel of the day was the Disney Voice Actor Panel.  I talked about meeting Tony Anselmo on Thursday, and on Saturday I finally met Bill Farmer, voice of Goofy in person.

The voice actor panel was seriously so delightful.  These men are the real deal, so very talented and dedicated to the portrayal of these iconic characters.  Annicka and I laughed until we cried, they talked in so many voices and were just so good. Some highlights:

-Tony was born in Salt Lake City.  He saw Mary Poppins as a 4 year old and decided he wanted to do that, as in all of it, and set all of his life goals to achieve work for Disney.
-Tony started in animation and ended up apprenticing with the original voice of Donald for 5 years.  He has done the voice ever since.
-The last movie Tony animated was the Lion King.
-Bill got his start doing voices because he was a movie nut and tried to imitate everyone he could.  He ended up doing radio and comedy clubs where Bill Engvall discovered him. Landed in Hollywood in 1987 and auditioned to be Goofy.  Has done Goofy, Pluto, and others ever since.
-Bill and the guy who voiced Max had to do a live reading of the movie while it played at his son's birthday party.
-The voices actors of Mickey and Minnie were married in real life.
-Both Tony and Bill picked up the characteristics of the characters in their every day life.  Tony did a painting of Goofy holding a martini glass in exchange for Bill spraying for ants at his house.  Basically it looked like Goofy himself was doing it.
-"It's not about your vocal chords, the character comes from the soul."
-They have only been in the costumes once, Tony dressed as Goofy and Bill has put on Goofy's head.  They are so hot and Disneyland is so hot, that they are pretty sure the kids who wear them at the park die every 4 hours and they just find new kids to be them.
-When asked who is Max's mother, is it Clara-Bell?  Bill said, "No its Jessica Rabbit, he's goofy, not stupid."

Other highlights of Friday:

Finally SLCC and the food trucks in the valley have gotten wise and parked along west temple outside of the convention hall for lunch.  So wonderful to try new food trucks and have a wider variety for food.  Annicka and I enjoyed some grilled cheese at the Mouse-trap and Donut Kabobs. So much yum.

Some fun on the floor:

This man is Mr. Punch.  He gave me his number and address in case I ever needed him to destroy someone who hurt me.
